Contemporary black calf, front board with central recessed panel and gilt title:"Holy Bible. Illustrations References And Maps". Pierced brass corners and clasps (in working order). Spine with 4 raised bands, blind stamped decorated compartments and gilt title: "Holy Bible". All edges gilt. Yellow endpapers. Coloured lithographic frontis, followed by coloured title, followed by printed title. With a further 23 black & white images,15 full-page coloured images, 2 full-page coloured maps, and a "Family Register" with neat entries and photographs for the "Payne " family. Also bound at the rear: "A Concise Biblical Cyclopaedia: A Dictionary Of Sacred Biography, Natural History, Ancient Geography, Eastern Antiquities, And Theology." Clean English text throughout, in double columns with notes in the central margin and more comprehensive notes at the bottom of each page. A very clean book, with light toning to a few pages. VG . ** Family history records show that Frank Payne was born on 14 August 1890 in Madeley, Staffordshire, the son of Eleanor and George. A Coal Miner. He married Gwendoline Griffiths in 1915. They had one child during their marriage. He died in March 1955 in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire, at the age of 64.
